Getting to grips with heat pumps

Calculating building heat loss and sizing heat pumps can be areas of confusion for many installers and heating engineers. Thankfully, help is at hand from renewable domestic and commercial heating solutions provider Ecoerne, with its Introduction to Heat Loss and Hydronics training course.

Held at its Enniskillen training centre, the intensive one-day course combines theory and practical application to upskill participants in the fundamentals of heat loss and hydronics, alongside access to ongoing guidance and support as required.

Denzil Cluff, Managing Director of Ecoerne, said, “We train installers and engineers on how to do a thorough building survey, using the Heat Engineer app. We then train the attendees in how to use the information to size a heat pump, pipework, emitters and produce a professional design report for a client. But it’s not just a training course.

“It can be the start of a partnership, as anyone who has gone through the course can avail of ongoing support from Ecoerne to help when they’re doing their first job or every job.”

Completion of the course also assists companies in taking the first step to gaining MCS accreditation for the installation of heat pumps under the scheme.

And Ecoerne will be rolling out further related courses in 2024, including advanced hydronics covering hydraulic separation, buffer design, weather compensation and controls and the installation and integration of solar PV battery and storage with heat pumps.

Introduction to Heat Loss and Hydronics

Location: Ecoerne Training Facility, Enniskillen
(Heat Engineer Ireland Approved Training Centre)

• Guaranteed understanding of building heat loss and heat pump sizing in one day: participants will have all the tools to be self-sufficient.

• Hands-on surveying and use of the Heat Engineer App and Software: after theory training, participants use a Bluetooth laser measure to survey Ecoerne’s training facility, specially designed to include complex features such as vaulted ceilings.

• Designing an on-site heating system for a heat pump including pipe, emitter and pump sizing: after completing theory and practical training, participants are challenged to independently design a heat pump solution.

• Produce a professional heat loss and design report with Heat Engineer software: participants’ survey results are transferred over into software to produce a professional design report for a client.

• Free trial of Heat Engineer software post-training: participants are offered the opportunity to play around with the software before committing to a purchase.

• Access to support from Ecoerne for first or ongoing jobs: post-course, ongoing support and guidance is available, if needed.

• Free access to the Ecoerne Renewable Network for up-to-date industry information and support: highlights the latest energy efficient products on the market and sometimes even leads.

• *New feature* – Each training course has a sponsored manufacturer or supplier demonstrating/promoting energy-efficient products or processes: firms showcase their products or services in a 15-minute presentation.

• *Coming soon* – Ecoerne is launching a new website in January 2024, including an automated booking function for its training courses and online shop.
