Taking pride in a job done right

A family-run company with a personal stake in every project, MR Mechanical Services Ltd is thriving as a commercial contractor specialising in school projects…

‘Getting it right first time’ has propelled MR Mechanical Services Ltd from a small-scale domestic installer into a thriving commercial business.

A plumbing, heating and ventilation contractor with an extensive portfolio of clients in the commercial, healthcare and education sectors, the family firm was founded in 2015 by Mark Rocks.

Mark has more than 25 years of experience in the industry, with the firm’s roots dating back to 2006 when he decided to start his own business.

At the time a qualified plumber working in Dundalk, he made the move with his apprentice Kevin McFerran. Kevy would become the firm’s longest-serving employee, ultimately progressing to his current role as operations manager.

Mark said, “It was just the two of us to start with but, within six months, we started adding plumbers and the business has grown steadily since then.”

Domestic installations were the bread and butter for the fledgling firm in its early years, followed by an expansion into renewables such as air-source heat pumps and solar PV.

The team boosted its knowledge in the growing sector and made the most of government incentives available at that time.

“There was a gap in the market,” said Mark, “and then our move into commercial work was the next logical step to allow the business to continue to grow.”

The establishment of MR Mechanical Services coincided with the move into larger commercial projects, which span schools, hospitals, apartment blocks, offices, restaurants and hotels.

The firm now employs 16 full-time members of staff including management and qualified foremen and journey men, placing an emphasis on the training and progression of its team.

Up to 20 sub-contractors provide support on bigger projects.

“We are a family-run business who focus on our staff’s wellbeing,” said Mark. “Our hope is the care we show to our staff can be translated to the works, with care taken on each job.”

The business is a registered with Construction Line and Gas Safe, and carries Safe T Cert Health & Safety Certification.

Mark Ennis joined MR Mechanical Services three years ago as project manager and has been instrumental in the expansion of its portfolio.

He said: “We focus on commercial works, specialising in school projects, but are very efficient with fit-outs with a long history of successful completions for large companies.

“As a family-run company, we have a strong personal stake in every project we undertake, so we take particular pride in a job done right.

“The ‘getting it right first time’ approach is fundamental to our business. We talk to the people we are working with and find out what they want and need.

“We have a proven track record of functioning in a pro-active, efficient and highly-skilled manner on behalf of our clients, and we bring an outstanding portfolio to each contract that guarantees the best of mechanical services.”

Among its most prestigious projects has been full strip-out and install of new mechanical equipment throughout a school in Dublin under the auspices of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland Pathfinder Programme for retrofitting.

“This was a large contract that served up a number of obstacles for us to overcome,” said Mark. “This called for a team effort not only in our own company, but collaboration with a number of companies to ensure we met the tight schedules and standards required.”

“We completed the works on this job not only on time, but to a high standard. It was the successful completion of smaller commercial works that prepped us for this and allowed us to not only win the job but to complete it.”

MR Mechanical Services operates its own fleet of 13 vehicles, including larger vans used for on-site deliveries and a six-seater to transport its team to larger projects. “Continued investment in our fleet ensures it remains fresh and reliable,” said Mark.

Investment is ongoing across people, infrastructure, equipment and marketing, with an update of the firm’s Warrenpoint headquarters to accommodate its burgeoning team and addition of new technology to facilitate online meetings with major clients.

“We use our social media platforms to market ourselves,” said Mark, with the business active on Facebook and LinkedIn. “We are investing more time and money in this, to try and be sure we are getting ourselves in front of the correct market.

“We feel we have a lot more to offer and will continue our push to grow the business, while holding onto our core of ensuring works are completed on time and to an extremely high standard.”
