Guide outlines carbon monoxide detection requirements in Northern Ireland

A new publication offers specific guidance for engineers complying with carbon monoxide detection regulations in Northern Ireland.

The guide has been created by the Heating and Hotwater Industry Council (HHIC) and Council of Gas Detection and Environmental Monitoring (CoGDEM), following several regulatory changes creating differing requirements across the regions of the UK.

It provides best practice for each region, addressing potential confusion among engineers around the variation in CO legalisation across NI, England, Wales and Scotland.

The role of heating engineers in maintaining CO safety throughout the industry is growing in importance, with all property owners required to ensure CO detectors are present in appropriate locations in compliance with legislation.

Differing requirements – including the number of CO detectors required in a property, batteries that must be used and the position in which detectors must be installed – are included in the guide.

Andy Curtis, Director of CoGDEM, said, “There may still be confusion around the extent of responsibility of repairing, replacing and testing detectors. Our guide has been created to put this uncertainty to rest and ensure safety in properties across the UK.”
