Scoil an Athar Tadhg Primary School, Co. Cork

Prefabrication helps streamline school construction to meet project timelines and boost efficiency...

Mechanical services contractor Murphy & Kelly (Thomastown) Ltd delivered a substantial mechanical services installation for a 14-classroom school – Scoil an Athar Tadhg – in Carrignavar, Co Cork.

The newly built, two-storey school building also includes office spaces, special education tuition rooms, a library, resource rooms and multi-purpose areas. The school’s construction marked a significant milestone, replacing the former school that had served the local community since 1974.

The project involved constructing a 3,229sqm national school on an expansive greenfield site. MMD Construction in Cork collaborated with Murphy & Kelly through the tender process. Dean Kelly, Contracts Director for Kelly & Murphy, commented, “We were delighted to be awarded this project by MMD Construction, continuing our long-established working relationship with them. We have completed several schools together over the last number of years, all finished to a very high standard.”

Matt O’Mahony & Associates provided M&E consultancy, working closely with Murphy & Kelly through the submittal and co-ordination stages of the project right through construction and handover.

Murphy & Kelly’s extensive experience in school projects across the country streamlined the construction process. “On this job, we sped up the installation by prefabricating the plant rooms off-site which allowed us to assemble it onsite in just four days. This strategy allowed follow-on trades and other sub-contractors to progress their works to optimise project timelines.

“The ventilation installation on site also progressed quickly because we manufacture all of our own sheet metal ventilation systems at our factory in Thomastown, Co Kilkenny,” added Dean. “We have full control of manufacture of all our ventilation ductwork in-house.”

The new primary school includes sustainable elements such as rainwater harvesting for toilet flushing and advanced temperature sensors controlled by a Building Management System. These features ensure energy-efficient operations while providing a comfortable learning environment for both students and teachers.

Drawing from four decades of expertise, Murphy & Kelly maximised its partnerships with trusted suppliers, emphasising quality in every aspect of the project.

All on-site activities, including ventilation, gas, plumbing and heating were executed by Murphy & Kelly’s highly skilled labour force. Their proficiency and dedication ensured the successful implementation of the project’s technical aspects.

Murphy & Kelly is a family-owned, highly-skilled and well-resourced mechanical contractor experienced in servicing large and small projects throughout Ireland.

Commenting on the completed project, Dean said, “This has showcased Murphy & Kelly’s commitment to delivering outstanding results.

“The project’s success is down to the high-quality equipment and materials used and supported by suppliers who ensured proper installation and commissioning for optimal performance. The collaboration with MMD’s site team was seamless, which created a productive working relationship.”

“Our on-site, day-to-day operations were led by Eoin Cody, as our Site Manager. My role as Contracts Manager involved making sure everything was completed correctly and efficiently on a daily basis. Director Steven Kelly was responsible for estimating, purchasing and quality control.

“It’s a building that we’re proud to have been involved in. When it was officially opened, the local people who attended were delighted. They saw it as an historic day for the community and parish of Carrignavar.”
