Down Leisure Centre

Gilmore Engineering Services complete one of the company’s largest ever projects at Down Leisure Centre

The partnership approach of Gilmore Engineering Services Ltd helped to ensure the Down Leisure Centre project remained right on track. The £15.5m facility for Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is a state-of-the-art centre. Facilities in the flagship centre include an 85-station Wellness Technogym with cutting-edge technology, luxury Vitality Health Suite, a spin studio, and a four-court sports hall alongside a six-lane swimming pool and learner pool with moveable floor, which can be adjusted for different agesand abilities.

It replaces the existing Down Leisure Centre which is onan adjacent site and is being demolished to create additional car parking for the new centre. While this was one of the largest projects completed by Gilmore Engineering Services, the experienced team played an integral part in the successful planning and installation of the mechanical systems at this state-of-the-art leisure centre.

Andy Gilmore, Managing Director, explained, “Co- ordination proved the biggest challenge on this project, butwe worked closely with main contractor, Felix O’Hare, and electrical contractor, JD McGeown Ltd, to put the necessary planning in place.”

An important part of this planning process was working closely with Phoenix Natural Gas on the co-ordination of the new supply line to the site.

“Phoenix Gas had only just become available in the area so this was the first-evergas commercial project in Downpatrick,” added Andy.

“We had to work very closely with Phoenix to co-ordinate this whole process and ensure that their plans corresponded with ours. The timing had to be exact to keep our work on track.” With a strict deadline to meet, Gilmore Engineering Services utilised BIM to ensure the project remained on schedule.

“BIM is essential on projects of this nature and I’d say we were able to iron out about 95% of potential issues using this technology,” added Andy. “That makes a significant difference when you start work on site and are up against a strict timescale.”

The mechanical services installed by Gilmore Engineering Services ranged from the gas- fired central heating, chilled water system, supply and extract solutions, rainwater harvesting, pool filtration and the sanitary ware package.

One of the central aspects of the work also included the installation of the ventilation ductwork system. Instead of the traditional-style sheet metal systems, Gilmore Engineering Services used the pre-insulated ductwork system, Kingspan KoolDuct System. This advanced and innovative pre-insulated, rectangular HVAC ductwork system is installed in a single fix, eliminating virtually all of the problems associated with galvanised sheet steel lagged with mineral fibre.
